Scars That Remain (2011)
The Scars That Remain digital print series imagines a cartography that mirrors the trauma of the West African coastal lands on the continent before the slaves boarded the ships and entered the middle passage. I took sections of an 18th century map of the west coast of Africa and imposed variations of the same group of scratches and markings.
"and when they disembarked. if they disembarked. when they were pushed out onto the land, the kidnappers treated them like an undifferentiated mass. or a mass differentiated by market value.which was part of the violence and all of the lie." -Archive of Ocean, M Archive, Alexis Pauline Gumbs
